Africentials knows that we have come upon a new era in this country. One where we cannot think and act in a self centered manner. We must build and maintain relationships with one another and it is crucial to our survival. This is characteristic of one of the principles of African centered living? Do you know which one and let’s talk about it!

In the pursuit of doctoral study we searched for a program that would accomplish two objectives; to find a program that would allow us to make a measurable contribution to our African American community and the second to facilitate career growth and advancement. We chose the Adult and Continuing Education program in the college of Arts and Sciences at National-Louis University because our preliminary inquiry revealed that this program was one of very few programs in the U.S. that included the lived experiences of African Americans in this country as a part of graduate curriculum. It had been our independent experiences in our traditional Eurocentrically based education, that the true opportunity to study culturally relevant curriculum had not been available to us.

Having worked in the field of adult education as an assistant professor at a four year private college, and as a student affairs administrator in a two year public college, we’ve come into contact with students who have similar experiences. We’ve seen through our own experiences and in encounters with our students that the traditional education African American students receive in both public and private educational environments, neglects to connect their education to community, culture and religious faith.

Consequently, based on our values which connect culture, faith and community in the developmental process of African Americans, we sought out individually to choose research topics that would reconnect students to these traditions as well as provide an environment conducive to that reconnection.

The liberatory transformative process of “self” to Selfethnic, is inclusive of the Summoning to Selfethnic Awareness, The Immersion in the Serarch for Selfethnic Knowledge and the Internalization of Selfethnic Knowledge are all stages in the process that we have described thus far of the experience that a person of African descent may encounter when studying the Africentric intellectual knowledge base during graduate study. The participants in this study have gained knowledge of Selfethnic and experienced a paradigm shift to African Centered values and beliefs. Because they have had this experience we asked them to share how they now view the world from an African Centered perspective and what commitments they made at the end of their graduate study.
